Webster’s dictionary defines wellness as “the quality or state of being healthy, especially as the result of deliberate effort”. It also states, “an approach to health care that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life.” It is my belief that optimal wellness is holistic wellness. Wellness from a holistic perspective goes beyond just the physical being. It must consider the wellbeing of the whole person. If we view Webster’s definition from a holistic perspective, “the quality or state of being healthy” would be inclusive of the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of being. Holistic coaching in its approach to preventing illness and prolonging life is a more complete process with consideration for the whole person.
