TRANSITION TO RETIREMENT

We frequently hear much about planning our financial security for “those marvelous retirement years”. We hear that the retirement years should be the best years. The actor Dennis Hopper in a recent television commercial dramatically implores us with, “You need a plan!” The financial issues are certainly a major part of “the retirement plan” but they are only a part of the whole life plan. Jack Nicholson recently portrayed a character who finds himself sleeping on the top of his RV, confused and diminished in his retirement. Post-retirement depression is common. A close friend of mine, a clinical psychologist, frequently treats retired CEOs coping with the “Mr. Nobody” syndrome. He warns of the "SOMEBDODY” in their TRANSITION TO RETIREMENT who suddenly and unexpectedly wakes up one morning a “nobody”.

Hopefully, your career has been fulfilling, rewarding you with a sense of importance, that you mattered and that you made a positive difference. As you transition to retirement, how do you intend to maintain that sense of fulfillment and importance in your life? How are you going to redefine who you are? How are you still going to matter?
