Many people are looking for a meaningful, lasting, and deep felt spiritual recovery from a traumatic loss or event that challenged their spiritual wellness. Others may be seeking recovery from the damage of a harmful religious past. Some of us are simply awakening to a new spiritual consciousness. There are those who say we are on the cusp of a new collective awakening, a shift in universal spiritual consciousness. I have found, for me, the beginnings of my own healing and my personal path to spiritual recovery. If you are on your own quest for spiritual recovery, I would be pleased to share my experience with you.
I was raised in a spiritually unhealthy environment. It was avidly religious but unfortunately also rigid, legalistic, fear-laden, separatist, and judgmental. It was not spiritual. It was much more about ideological doctrine and intolerable fundamentalism than it was about a loving, forgiving spiritual connection to the universal human soul. I was never comfortable or at peace with the relentless indoctrination and its resulting worrisome voices that lived in my head. My internal struggle with doubt and lack of piety was accompanied by nagging feelings of guilt and fear of an impending damnation. Consequently, my personal spiritual wellbeing suffered dearly. This had a profoundly oppressive affect on my spiritual peace that lingered well into my adulthood.
For thirty years I was on an anguished quest to find spiritual peace and to heal my spiritual heart. I was not only in a process of discovery but also of recovery. My spiritual peace was not to be found in another religion. Indeed, my process made me suspicious of all organized religions and their tendency toward a forced collective consciousness. But in my most recent years, I have begun to find a deep spiritual peace and resolution through what I believe to be an emerging universal spiritual consciousness.
Some might simply stereotype this as the “new age” religion. No matter what you call it, by its very nature, it is not “religious”. It is too individually mystical to be confined to a religious set of doctrinal creeds. It is a new awareness spiritual- a new consciousness in universal connectedness, love, and optimism. It is a restructuring of how we understand ourselves, our relationship to our ego, and our relationship to the Source of everything that exists. Some of the leaders of this new spiritual awareness are teachers such as Eckhart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Michael Bernard Beckwith, Esther and Jerry Hicks, and Brian Weiss. Tolle’s books, The Power of Now and A New Earth are two of the most important chronicles of spiritual insight into this new awareness.
There are many, many more souls like myself who have shared a similarly unfulfilling, spiritually distressing religious past, who are seeking spiritual awareness, spiritual recovery, spiritual peace.
